Bindaree Outdoor Education has grown from a one-man-show to a very successful team of over 80 employees. All field staff are regulated through our Enterprise Bargaining Agreement and must be externally qualified with current log-booked experience, have current remote area or wilderness first aid and a valid Working with Children Check.

Brendan Layh
Brendan LayhOwner & Managing Director
After teaching outdoor education in a range of government and private schools for over twenty years, Brendan created two outdoor companies in 1990, Bindaree Outdoors and Bindaree Hire, to provide outdoor programs and educational experiences for just three local schools. One of these schools remain with Bindaree to this day.

During the first five years, Brendan performed all duties within these companies – field, management, finances etc. – before gradually attracting more and more client schools & community groups, employing an ever wider range of outdoor specialist and administrative staff and expanding its resources and facilities to become the business it is today.

Gemima Weiler
Gemima WeilerHR Manager | Managing Director
Gemima completed a Bachelor of Business Tourism and Enterprise Management at Swinburne University of Technology and was granted a scholarship to completed her studies at the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside in 2001.

Over the last 18 years Gemima has worked in numerous business and has taken on various management roles within the Outdoor Education Industry. Gemima has also held position’s such as an International Travel Agent, Wholesale Travel Manager, Head of Client Support and Student Support Manager for an Registered Training Organisation.

Gemima is passionate about the education of young adults and strongly believes that experiential education and education through the outdoors can provide positive and empowering experiences that young adults can take with them throughout their life journeys; wherever that may lead.

Samuel Atkins
Samuel AtkinsBindaree Outdoor Education Manager
Sam has been involved in the ‘Outdoor Recreation Industry’ since starting his study in 2008. Sam started his journey with Bindaree Outdoor Education in 2009 as a Group Leader and has since been a Program Manager, the Operations Manager and currently the Bindaree Outdoor Education Manager. Sam’s passions include bike riding and paddle sports and he feels most at home on a white water journey program.
Catherine Baines
Catherine BainesOperations Manager
Originally from England, Cat started working in the outdoors after University in 2007. Throughout 2010-2012, she freelance instructed, travelled and lived in Australia, New Zealand and France. In September 2012, Cat started working at Bindaree full time as a Program Manager and has worked in both Staffing and Operations Manager roles. On her weekends and holidays Cat is often in the outdoors bushwalking, climbing and camping.

Kaitlyn Ross Jackson
Kaitlyn Ross JacksonProgram Manager
Kaitlyn studied Outdoor Education at La Trobe University in Bendigo. She has worked with Bindaree since 2013 as a Group Leader and as a Specialist Activity Leader. In 2016, Kaitlyn started as a Program Manager at Bindaree.
Kaitlyn’s favourite activities are rafting and bushwalking in the High Country.
Nic Bishop
Nic BishopProgram Manager
Before joining the Outdoor Education industry, Nic gained 7 years’ experience in management and as a freelance photographer. Now in the Program Staffing Manager role at Bindaree, Nic is responsible for recruiting, developing and rostering casual field staff. Nic enjoys working as a river and climb guide and outside of work he loves surfing, running rivers in his kayak, and most of all spending his winters snowboarding.
Shaun Rogan
Shaun RoganProgram Manager
Shaun has always loved the outdoors and felt a connection to the environment. He has been working in the outdoors for the past six years focusing mainly on bushwalking, rock climbing and anything on moving water. Working with kids is what he enjoys most, witnessing the impact of outdoor education on our youth. His favourite trip was hiking and paddling from Mt Kosciusko to Marlo.
Hannah Cole
Hannah ColeProgram Manager
Hannah has worked in the outdoor industry since 2010 with corporate, adult and student client groups. She is a trained secondary teacher who is keen to facilitate development in young people through their experiences in the outdoors. Her teaching and outdoor education has taken her to Yemen, South Africa, Vietnam and India. She loves bushwalking, river journeys, caving, a good book, philosophising and a hearty whole-food meal.
Louis Callas
Louis CallasProgram Manager
Louis has worked with Bindaree since 2014 as a Group Leader and also in various Specialist Roles. In 2017 Louis began working as a Program Manager.
He loves seeing the students develop new life skills through their experiences on camp, forming new friendships and overcoming their fears.
His favourite outdoor activities include white water rafting, bushwalking and fossicking for rocks and crystals.
Timothy Kropf
Timothy KropfProgram Manager
Timothy started his work with Bindaree in 2012 as an Assistant Group Leader. He quickly progressed through various specialist roles within the company, and is now a full time Program Manager. Growing up, he was always out on camping trips with his family, and pushing the boundaries in his outdoor pursuits. Most of his time is spent on white water trips, or on a mountain bike gliding past trees.
