Leadership Camps That Empower Students

Leadership can’t be taught in a textbook—it has to be experienced. Bindaree’s outdoor leadership camps offer students the opportunity to step up, make decisions, and grow in real time, surrounded by peers and nature.

Whether you're a secondary school educator, year-level coordinator, or wellbeing leader, our programs are designed to support your goals while building strong, confident students.

What makes a good student leadership camp?

A strong camp will focus on experience over lecture. Students learn to lead by doing:

  • Taking charge of group tasks or journeys
  • Reflecting on their decisions and communication
  • Supporting others and managing challenges
  • Setting personal and group goals

Our programs are structured but flexible, allowing students to discover and develop their own leadership style.

What year levels are best suited for leadership camps?

Leadership camps are ideal for students in Years 9 to 11, when identity formation, social dynamics, and resilience are front of minds.

Some schools also run Year 7 or Year 8 transition camps with embedded leadership skills, or Year 12 retreats with a focus on legacy and teamwork.

What outcomes can schools expect?

Teachers consistently report:

  • Stronger peer relationships and social cohesion
  • Improved confidence and initiative in school settings
  • Greater self-awareness and emotional maturity
  • Readiness to take on school-based leadership roles

These outcomes are especially valuable for student leadership teams, captains, and peer mentors.

How does Bindaree structure its leadership camps?

Each camp is customised, but typical elements include:

  • Challenge-based activities: Low ropes, hikes, navigation, camp setup
  • Rotating leadership roles: Each student gets a chance to lead
  • Debrief sessions: Guided reflection circles to embed learning
  • Journaling prompt: For self-reflection and goal tracking

Are leadership camps linked to curriculum outcomes?

Yes. Our camps align with the Victorian Curriculum (Personal and Social Capability) and can support:

  • Health and Physical Education
  • Ethical Understanding
  • General Capabilities like teamwork, resilience, and initiative

Many schools also link the camp experience to follow-up leadership responsibilities back at school.

Do students need to be confident to benefit?

Not at all. In fact, some of the biggest breakthroughs happen with quieter students who find their voice in a supportive outdoor setting.

Our trained staff ensure every student has a chance to lead in a way that feels authentic to them.

Example: A 3-Day Year 10 Leadership Camp

School: Co-ed public high school in Gippsland

Group: 40 Year 10 students nominated for peer mentoring

Location: Bush setting near Lake Eildon

Activities: Expedition hiking, camp setup, team problem-solving, leadership reflection circles

Outcome: All 40 students returned with clear leadership goals and stronger group connection
